HBL and MBL: what they are and how they differ

Two common sea freight documents that are often confused.

A bill of lading is the document that records the carriage of cargo. Two types are common in practice: the MBL, issued by the shipping line, and the HBL, issued by the freight forwarder.

On an MBL the forwarder is usually named as the shipper with the line, whereas the HBL names the actual shipper and consignee of the goods. That is why the HBL relates more directly to the commercial parties.

Before issue, check names, origin, destination, cargo description and freight terms carefully. Amending documents later is usually slow and costly.

The exact terms of each document depend on the contract and the rules of the route. Consult our team about your own shipment.
